WHO WE ARE

Cape CARES is a group of caring volunteers who have donated their time and resources to improve the lives of the poor and needy of Central American, specifically Honduras. We are physicians, specialists, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists, chiropractors, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, medical and dental students, and support people such as translators and drivers. We are also bank tellers, secretaries, carpenters, office workers, retired executives, housewives, and teenagers. We are volunteers at home and in Honduras. We are thoughtful, sensitive individuals who donate our time and expertise to provide care to people in need. We are from all walks of life but with one shared purpose: WE CARE.

WHAT WE DO

Cape CARES sends nine teams to Honduras offering free medical and dental services to people in locations where there is no access to ongoing medical treatment. We offer friendship and develop a bond with the people in the villages we visit. Sometimes a smile or a hand on the shoulder of a sick or frightened person is the best way to show that we care.

OUR IN-COUNTRY COORDINATORS & FRIENDS

Cape CARES is most grateful to the Honduran members of the Knights of Malta for their support and assistance in coordination of Cape CARES medical/dental missions. The Knights’ play a vital role in the success of our efforts to bring services to the people at our sites. The historic mission of the Knights of Malta is to help the sick, the needy and the most disadvantaged in society. The Knights continue their work today, operating in more than 120 countries. Their programs include medical and social assistance, disaster relief in the case of armed conflicts and natural catastrophes, emergency services and first aid corps, help for the elderly, the handicapped and children in need and the provision of first aid training, and support for refugees and internally displaced persons regardless of race, origin or religion. The Order of Malta has been operating with this impartial perspective for over 900 years, caring for people of all beliefs – Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. From the Wooster School (Danbury, Connecticut) Newspaper:

Wooster Middle School Collects 1,090 Toothbrushes

Many people dislike going to the dentist and visits are approached with dread. 6th grader Preston Novy went for his yearly visit and heard his dental hygienist, Mrs. Autuori, speak about the need for toothbrushes in Honduras. Preston left his dental check-up with a mission to collect toothbrushes for these children.

The Middle School invited Mrs Autuori to speak at an Assembly and she described her trips to teach rural villagers proper dental care. She has been traveling to Honduras for the past ten years with CAPE CARES. The organizations goals are to bring medical, optical and dental care to Central America. For twenty years Preston's dentist, Dr. Randall Baldwin, has also been traveling to Honduras to take part in dental clinics in rural villages.

The Middle School set a goal of 500 toothbrushes. They collected 1,090. The generosity of Wooster students has shone through again.
